Topological foundations of Quantum Computation



I will describe a new topological foundation for computation, presented in terms of defects between topological field theories (TFTs). This gives new techniques for reasoning about quantum procedures, such as quantum teleportation and dense coding, and strong classical models for many 'quantum' phenomena. If you are interested in TFTs, or classical encryption, or Latin squares, or Morse theory, or thermodynamics, or the foundations of quantum theory --- or what these things have to do with each other --- come to my talk! Everything will be described from first principles with lots of pictures. I will also outline recent work on a new classification of 1-2-3 TQFTs (joint work with Bruce Bartlett, Chris Douglas and Chris Schommer Pries.)
