Congratulations to Dr Jiannis Pachos from Theoretical Physics group in the School, who has received the Supervisor Award at the Partnership Awards Ceremony on 27th April 2015.

The Supervisor Award recognises, 'the person who has guided and inspired others to push the boundaries of their dissertation, final year project and PhD thesis.' The award ceremony was hosted by Leeds University Students Union and acknowledges achievements for staff and students across a broad range, from Innovation to Outreach.

Once again, congratulations to Jiannis.




Welcoming Dr Papic

The School of Physics and Astronomy is happy to welcome Dr Zlatko Papic to the department as a member of the recently formed Theoretical Physics group led by Dr Almut Beige.

Zlatko has joined the school from the Perimeter Institute in Canada where he was a postdoctoral fellow. He obtained his PhD from Universite Paris-Sud in 2010 and subsequently worked at Princeton University as a postdoctoral researcher (2010-2013). 

He is a condensed matter theorist with a broad interest in quantum many-body systems. His research focuses on topological phases, graphene, fractional quantum Hall effect, quantum information concepts such as entanglement and matrix-product states/tensor networks used to describe condensed matter systems and nonequilibrium dynamics of interacting quantum disordered systems.

The School is looking forward to working closely with Zlatko and helping to develop his research further.

Dr Jiannis Pachos from the Theoretical Physics group in the School of Physics and Astronomy recent visited India to give a number of talks.

Jiannis' trip included a series of pedagogical lectures on Topological Quantum Information, which is an area of research that Jiannis is heavily involved in. Further information can be found here on Jiannis' group page.

In addition to this series of talks, Jiannis was invited to give a Colloquium to the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), which is located in Bhubaneswar, Orissa, India. The Insitute opened in 2006 and facilitates the synergy between research and higher education in science. Jiannis completed his Indian visit by giving a talk at the Current Trends in Condensed Matter Physics (CTCMP 2015), which is a cluster of topological meetings based on CTCMP.

Divergent series: from Thomas Bayes’s bewilderment to today’s resurgence via the rainbow

 

Abstract: It is important to understand divergent series, because most series encountered in physical applications diverge. Following the discovery by Bayes in 1747 that Stirling’s series for the factorial is divergent, the study of asymptotic series has today reached the stage of enabling summation of the divergent tails of many series with an accuracy far beyond that of the smallest term. Several of these advances sprang from developments of Airy’s theory of waves near optical caustics such as the rainbow. Key understandings by Euler, Stokes, Dingle and Écalle unify the different series corresponding to different parameter domains, culminating in the concept of resurgence: quantifying the way in which the low orders of such series reappear in the high orders.
